VU2BBB repeater was started by Bombay Repeater Society in late 1980s. Licence to the repeater was issued on 1st November, 1988. It was in service for many years. But in recent years due to technical and locational problems it was not on air. We are happy to put it back on air, at a better location, Matheran, a small hill station near Mumbai. This repeater site is given to us by the Collector’s office, Thane.
This repeater is regularly accessed by VU2HOC from Valsad (182km), VU2JRT from Surat, VU2UPQ from Pune and from Nasik by VU2CVD and VU2SNK. During April/May the repeater is accessible formRajkot,Baroda and other parts ofGujarat. Some signals may be noisy due to topography of the region. Repeater is accessible with low power all over Mumbai with a good signal strength.
Even slightest amount of rain causes mist to cover the place, favourable conditions for lightning strike. On 1st November, 2007, there was the first a lightning strike on an experimental setup with two different antennas and everything was destroyed. Both radios, power supply, interface, charger, power line and both antenna were damaged beyond repair. We had gone through very tough times last few years and after learning lesson from the incidents, we have taken the necessary steps. Since June 2011, we the whole underground cables were got changed from the electricity department and now the repeater is working well. The repeater have battery back-up with solar panels
